Legal Counsel Job in Sydney

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical legal professional to join our team as our first Legal Counsel. We are looking for someone to assist with the the review, drafting, and negotiating customer contracts, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and supporting collections efforts. Additionally, the role involves establishing and managing legal structures in new jurisdictions as the company expands.

This is a new role for us and will play an important role in how we manage our existing and future contract negotiations and obligations. It would be well suited to someone looking to move out of a law firm into a fast-growing startup, or someone doing a similar role in-house and looking for a new challenge.

The role

Your day to day here will look something like this:

Customer Contract Management:

Review, analyze, and draft customer contracts
Identify and address potential legal risks and liabilities within contracts
Negotiate contract terms with customers as needed
Maintain a centralized contract repository and ensure accurate contract tracking

Compliance:

Ensure that the company is in compliance with different customer requirements
Conduct regular compliance audits and assessments.
Develop and implement compliance policies and procedures.
Provide guidance and training to employees on compliance matters.
Manage relationships with external compliance consultants or auditors.
Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards

Collections:

Assist with collections efforts
Review and analyze collection-related documents
Identify potential actions to recover outstanding debts

Global Legal Structure:

Research and analyze legal requirements for establishing business operations in new jurisdictions
Coordinate with external legal counsel to establish necessary legal entities and structures.
Manage ongoing legal and compliance matters in foreign markets

What we are looking for

Juris Doctorate (JD) or equivalent legal degree
Experience in contract review, drafting, and negotiation
Experience in compliance and risk management
Experience with employment law is an advantage
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Attention to detail and ability to work independently
Strong organisational and time management skills
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Founded in Australia, we've hit millions in ARR & have (very!) recent funding ($5 million in May 2023 & $9.5 million in October 2023 backed by EVP, and most recently $17.5m) that we'll use for growing our team to continue to improve our product, bring in new customers and enable them to make better and more informed decisions.

We have a hybrid work environment at two days a week in the office (Monday, Friday) with teams in Sydney, Melbourne and New York.

Equity (ESOP) is offered to all staff on top of their salary and we also offer additional annual leave after 1 year of tenure (from 20 to 25 days a year) that continues to grow another day each year of service until you max out at 30 days per year.
