Auror

At Auror, we’re empowering the retail industry to tackle theft and Organised Retail Crime, a $150 Billion problem globally. It’s high volume crime that’s increasingly organised in nature and is putting people, retailers, and communities at risk every day.

Founded in New Zealand 11 years ago, we’re working with some of the best and largest retailers in the world across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Auror is connecting people and intelligence to reduce crime. We’re using technology for good.

In partnership with our leading retail partners, we need people with the passion, determination, and innovation required to overcome one of the world's largest problems. If you’re looking to make a difference with and for the people dedicated to stopping crime, for good, then we want you on our team.

Quality Engineering at Auror

Our Quality Engineering team’s mission is to foster a habit of understanding the value and the risk of changes in the product. We ensure everyone is aware of what the Quality of a product is and equip our teams to deliver software at scale with quality and velocity.

The product team ships code to production on average at least 10-15 times a day prioritising small release and short feedback cycles. At Auror, we believe that everyone across the business is responsible for quality and Quality Assurance Engineers are our quality experts. We don’t see our quality experts as someone who just catches bugs and carries out manual testing, they look for ways to discuss risk and testability early in partnership with the team, get involved from the start to the end of a project: from design and research, to monitoring usage and abnormalities in the production environment.

The Role

As a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer, you’ll be one of our quality experts responsible for working within or closely with a cross-functional team to:

  • Advocate and collaborate on building quality into the product development lifecycle
  • Deliver a high level of quality in our products in a fast and efficient way
  • Refine and mature quality engineering practices

Practically, this will involve:

  • Leveraging your solid understanding of designs and technology choices to successfully advocate for appropriate quality consideration during the software design phase.
  • Designing effective quality approach and test strategies.
  • Educating and coaching others to consider and mitigate risks or to increase confidence by creating appropriate tests.
  • Engaging with relevant partners to remain in alignment on the needs of our customers and overall business goals and using this information to guide how/when/where quality practices are deployed.
  • Effectively communicating product issues or surfacing risks that might impact progress or projects owned by other teams
  • Delivering risk-driven quality management solutions that are informed by quality metrics you gather and share with your team.
  • Effectively debug problems, analysing the root cause and understanding how to prevent them.
  • Advocating for automation scripts and tools that will support both efficiency and productivity.
  • Actively contributing and taking ownership to drive the success of product and quality engineering goals.

At Auror we don’t distinguish between Test Automation Engineer and QA focused on manual testing. We see test automation as a tool to help us perform repeatable checks and give us confidence whenever we release to know the scenarios under test are still working as expected. We are looking for someone who is proficient in utilising test automation tooling and has a strong focus on Quality Engineering practice, taking the initiative to drive improvements and changes while working closely with cross functional development teams.

Some challenges we face as we scale out our team and expand our product:

  • Keeping our e2e regression test suite runtime under 5 minutes and failure rate below 0.01%
  • Evaluating whether Cypress is still the right framework for us to use, and if Playwright could provide better speed, reliability and developer experience
  • Increasing the confidence and reduce manual effort required when releasing our Mobile app
  • Increasing our confidence level in the data pipeline when performing changes

This role reports to Aroha Merrilees, Quality Engineering Lead

I have held multiple roles within the tech industry from developer, consulting, application support, and of course, quality engineering. My diverse career has provided me with a broad range of experiences and a good understanding of business needs.

I am a people person, which helps me to build strong relationships within my team and across the business. These connections are essential for helping my team grow both professionally and personally. And I find it very rewarding to see people in my team advance in their careers.

I really enjoy collaborating, especially when it comes to finding ways to improve our quality practices. I am passionate about people and quality - and so is Auror!

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active. I play football during the winter, and participate in a couple of organised running events over summer. I’m quite handy around the house too; I like doing a bit of DIY and gardening. I also like to get outdoors with my dog.
